And finally… fight the machine
A businessman has been arrested and charged with inciting public unrest after giving his employees a raise.
One of at least 10 businessmen arrested, Pyae Phyo Zawwhose three cellphone stores were closed, was punished by Myanmar’s military regime.
A local lawyer explained that while not prohibited by law, wage increases are seen as undermining the regime by making people believe inflation is rising. The junta claims such actions incite unrest.
Critics said it was a desperate attempt to control the narrative surrounding the country’s economic collapse, which is facing rising inflation, Bangkok Post Office reports.
One employee said anonymously: “We were very grateful for the pay rise, but now the store is closed and I don’t get paid. Ordinary people like us are suffering from the high prices, almost to the point of desperation.”
