In April 2021, the Bitcoin market capitalization reached an all-time high and increased by over $1 trillion compared to the summer months. The market capitalization has declined since then, reaching approximately US$600 billion as of June 2021. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the total number of Bitcoins in circulation by the price of Bitcoin. Bitcoin’s market capitalization has grown from around US$1 billion in 2013 to several times that amount since its rise to popularity in 2017.
Use of Bitcoin among consumers
While its market capitalization grew at an incredible rate from 2013 to 2017, the public is only slowly becoming aware of its existence. THE Bitcoin Price Index (the average price of bitcoin on major global exchanges) has also increased significantly since its inception, from US$367 in January 2016 to a peak of over US$13,000 in late December 2017.
