Dan Hurley reveals finances may have played a role in Los Angeles’ refusal
The narratives surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers have been a little wild, especially the failed search for UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley. Interest in Hurley came out of nowhere, but the Lakers couldn’t land the plane.
Los Angeles reportedly offered him a six-year contract worth $70 million, far from the “godfather” offer we were hearing about. Many believed the low offer may have played a role in the Lakers rejecting Hurley and now we have more information on things.
Hurley appeared on the Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz and seemed to suggest that the financial aspect of things influenced his decision.
“To say it’s not a motivating factor – finances – to leave a place, that’s definitely one thing… To leave all that behind, there’s probably a number. I do not know what is.”

With the release of this news, there will certainly be those who place more blame on the Lakers’ management. However, the deal Hurley received was more than fair for someone who has never coached in the NBA before.
Hurley would have been one of the highest-paid coaches in the NBA despite his lack of experience. Either way, it was a risk for Los Angeles and Hurley apparently didn’t want to leave UConn just yet.
It was a good effort from Los Angeles, but it wasn’t meant to be. Now, the Lakers will turn their attention elsewhere, potentially back to their presumed original favorite, former NBA point guard JJ Redick.
