DVIDS – News – Finance, Comptroller’s Officer Returns to Jackson, SSI
Colonel Robert L. Le’iato returned to Fort Jackson to become the 43rd commandant of the Finance and Comptroller School and chief of the Finance Corps.
Le’iato assumed his new responsibilities when he received his colors from Col. Jason T. Edwards, commandant of the Soldier Support Institute, during a ceremony held in the SSI auditorium on July 30.
He was at Fort Jackson not only attending the School of Finance, as it was called in 2003, but later served there as the chief of proposition for the Army School of Financial Management.
“If you look at Rob’s biography, you’ll see an incredibly balanced and incredible career,” Edwards said after passing the colors to Le’iato during the ceremony.
The history and legacy of a military unit is represented by the colors it serves in. Historically, the unit colors would be where the commander would stand on the battlefield.
After receiving the colors representing his assumption of command of the unit, Le’iato was presented with regimental medallion No. 43 by Lt. Gen. Paul A. Chamberlain, deputy assistant military secretary of the Army for Financial Management and Comptroller.
Chamberlain was the commander of the SSI when Le’iato was the chief propounder.
Edwards said Le’iato’s experience “prepared him perfectly” for the duties of the 43rd commander.
He not only took on the difficult assignments, but performed exceptionally well and was geographically balanced with tours to the mainland and “division hotspots” such as Fort Carson, Colorado, Fort Liberty, North Carolina, and Fort Bliss, Texas.
Le’iato lives in American Samoa and graduated from the University of Hawaii, where he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Military Intelligence branch.
“These are incredible experiences that are layered on top of your level-headed disposition that will make you the perfect family member here at the Soldier Support Institute,” Edwards said.
Senior Army leaders in the Finance and Comptroller career field are showing “great confidence and trust in me for accepting this job,” Le’iato said. “It is a great honor to be the commandant of the Finance and Comptroller School.”
He also thanked his predecessor, Colonel Michelle Williams, who left the unit earlier this year.
The Finance Corps has its origins in 1775, when the Second Continental Congress introduced a resolution appointing a Paymaster General of the Army.
