Ethereum Co-Founder Urges Broader Political Perspective in Cryptocurrencies

Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum (ETH) co-founder, warned against basing political alliances solely on a candidate’s position on cryptocurrency.

In a recent blog postButerin expressed concern about the growing trend in the cryptocurrency community to support politicians primarily based on their crypto-friendly policies. He wrote:

I support making decisions [on who to vote based on the candidate’s position towards crypto] carries a high risk of going against the values that drove you to enter the world of cryptocurrencies in the first place.

Vitalik Buterin noted that recent legislative efforts, such as the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21) in the United States and the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA) in the European Union, have spurred greater political engagement within the cryptocurrency sphere. However, he argues that this approach may contradict the core values of the cryptocurrency movement.

Looking Beyond Cryptocurrencies in Politics

Vitalik Buterin warns that supporting politicians solely for their pro-crypto stance could create a situation where candidates only need to state their support for cryptocurrency to gain support, regardless of their other policies. Buterin suggests that this oversimplification could lead to supporting politicians who, while nominally pro-crypto, may actually be hindering the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem through other legislative actions:

All the politicians have to do is make sure it is easy for you to exchange coins.

In contrast to Buterin’s view, billionaire Mark Cuban has expressed a different view. Cuban believes that cryptocurrency policy could be a deciding factor in the upcoming US presidential election. He suggested that President Joe Biden’s stance on cryptocurrencies could even cost him reelection.

Cuban emphasized the importance of cryptocurrency to younger and independent voters, saying, “Crypto voters will be heard in this election.” He also said Biden must choose between supporting SEC Chairman Gary Gensler’s approach to crypto regulation or appealing to pro-crypto voters.
