Harvard freshman spends summer developing personal finance curriculum | State News

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KSHB) — The World Economic Forum said that by 2024 financial literacy in the US will be just below 50%.
It has remained around the 50% mark for the past eight years.
Pathway Financial Education, located near 18th and Vine in Kansas City, works to increase financial literacy every day.
LaTasha Jacobs, the nonprofit’s executive director, said school districts throughout the Kansas City area have reached out to Pathway for its expertise.
“I think a lot of them have teachers and instructors, but they don’t have a background in finance,” Jacobs said. “They have no experience in understanding how to manage their daily lives, or their family income, much less in teaching someone who is new or new to information.”
A local student hopes to bridge the gap in personal finance education through her internship at Harvard this summer.
Katie Murphy is a writer, academic and athlete. She said she wanted to focus on educating young people through the Harvard SPARK program before leaving town.
Murphy will develop a personal finance curriculum for Show-Me State students.
Having taken a similar course in Kansas just a few years ago, she is looking for ways to meet state standards and engage students.
“We’re planning to add some activities and try to make it more personalized for Kansas City teens,” she said.
Murphy said she hopes to remain involved in education after graduating with degrees in applied mathematics and economics, but has no concrete plans yet.
