ALPENA — MyMichigan Health, the Midland-based nonprofit that owns Alpena hospital, is currently seeing improved financials across all of its facilities, according to MyMichigan Chief Financial Officer Mike Rose, as hospitals increase staffing on site.

Rose said that during the transition in and out of the COVID-19 pandemic, staffing decreased considerably, which forced MyMichigan Health to rely on employees outside the agency to care for patients.

He said about 250 agency employees were hired at MyMichigan Health facilities, saying the Alpena hospital had the agency’s highest levels of staffing.

“I don’t have specific numbers for the Alpena hospital, but because of its geographic location, there weren’t many labor sources to recruit from,” Rose said. “They needed to rely on agency staff, but different efforts made in the area, like partnerships with local colleges, and for a while we didn’t see much of an impact, but now we’re seeing it pay dividends.”

Rose also mentioned the emerging percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena Regional STEMI Alert Program launched in October and said the program was critical for the region to reach, as PCI and STEMI cardiology procedures could only happen in other hospitals hours away. from Alpena Hospital.

According to MyMichigan Health, the programs benefited 21 residents in northeast Michigan.

In April, MyMichigan Health signed an agreement with Ascension Michigan to acquire Ascension’s Saginaw, Tawas and Standish medical facilities and make them part of the MyMichigan system.

On May 8, hackers broke into patient health records at 15 Ascension hospitals in Michigan, preventing employees from accessing electronic health record systems.

While the hospital network remains threatened by cyberattacks, MyMichigan Health declined to comment, saying it could make the company a target for bad actors.

At this time, there is no emerging threat to Alpena Hospital regarding cyberattacks.

MyMichigan Health also named MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena President Mike Erickson as the future leader of the new medical locations in Saginaw, Tawas and Standish on April 11.

While no replacement has yet been found for Erickson, he said he, senior staff and the local Alpena hospital board began reviewing applications in late April.

Erickson will assume this new position and will be replaced as president of Alpena Hospital by a successor once Ascension Hospitals formally joins MyMichigan, which is expected in early summer 2024.

Erickson said that while he is proud of his work as president over the past two years, he hopes the next leader will make even better improvements at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.
