Rachel Reeves dismisses bad news early to pave Labour’s way into next UK election
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves made one thing clear in her audit of UK public spending on Monday. The new Labour government plans to get ahead of the bad news, leaving as much time as possible to repair and rebuild the economy before the next election in five years.
During the election campaign, Ms Reeves promised the British public that she would always be honest with them, and now in office she has wasted no time. Just over three weeks into the job, she said the outgoing Tory administration had bequeathed her £21.9bn ($28.2bn) of “unfunded and undisclosed” spending commitments, before outlining a series of measures to address budgetary pressures.
