The finances of the Athens municipality are under scrutiny by the new administration
The Municipality of Athens will carry out an audit of the authority’s finances after the new administration discovered a significant deficit in its coffers, after taking office almost seven months ago.
The investigation, which will be carried out by a team of chartered accountants and lawyers, was ordered by the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, and approved by the City Council.
It concerns the financial management of the previous authority, under Kostas Bakoyannis, who was removed from office in October last year and handed over to the new authority in early 2024.
According to an announcement, the audit will focus on a deficit of 3.65 million euros, of which 2 million euros are related to a European Union-funded program for housing refugees, ESTIA.
Specifically, it will look at how the funds were managed by the municipality’s Tourism Development and Promotion Company, which was responsible for managing this funding and other sources of revenue, as well as executing various development projects.
