Former President Donald Trump speaks during a rally at Greenbrier Farms on Friday in Chesapeake, Virginia, one day after the first presidential debate of the 2024 election.
- 🎧 The whole thing reads like one of former President Donald Trump’s rally speeches and looks like a Truth Social post, NPR’s Stephen Fowler tells First. Fowler points out some contradictions, such as calls for same-day voting even though the Republican Party is pushing people to ““flood the ballot” and vote early. Notably absent are mentions of abortion, which only came up once. Trump’s official position is that states should decide on abortion restrictions. While some anti-abortion groups are unhappy with the softened language, Fowler says Republicans are still united behind Trump.
Global leaders gather in Washington, DC, for the annual NATO summit on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the alliance. The conference takes place one day after Russia’s launched a series of strikes in Ukrainekilling dozens of people, injuring more than 149 and destroying a children’s hospital in Kiev, according to the state emergency service.
- 🎧 The attack is likely to bolster support for Ukraine, NPR freelance reporter Teri Schultz says the leaders are expected to approve handing over coordination of soldier training and arms delivery logistics to Ukraine to NATO — something the U.S. has largely led. The allies are also ready to collectively promise to continue sending weapons and ammunition to Ukraine at current levels for at least another year. Schultz says these proposals were made in part because of concerns about Trump potentially cutting off aid to Ukraine if he is reelected.
A new method some surgeons are using to recover organs for donation is generating excitement among supporters which they say will increase the number of available organs. Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) involves connecting an external pump to the donor to restore blood flow and sometimes a heartbeat after the donor is declared dead. This prevents damage to the liver, kidney and heart. Critics say the procedure raises major ethical questions. An NPR team recently followed a transplant team on two attempts to perform NRP. See photos and read about the long and intense process here.
- 🎧 NPR’s Rob Stein says it was “powerful and eye-opening” to witness the procedure unfold. He spoke with bioethicist Alexander Capron, who called the procedure “disturbing.” One way a person can be declared dead is if their heartbeat and circulation cease permanently. Critics of the NRP say restarting circulation reverses this conditionreports Stein. He adds that the debate surrounding this procedure will not end anytime soon.

Elvia Elena Nunez and her grandson Esteban spent several months this spring in the Kith and Kin program.
Caregivers and daycare providers are a vital part of the economy, whether paid or unpaid. Childcare can look different for many families, with informal arrangements that allow millions of parents to be able to go to work. Kith and Kin is an Arizona-based program that teaches mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends, and neighbors who care for other people’s children the skills they need to provide care. The pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of the child care industry, as well as the need for policymakers and businesses to ensure access to affordable, high-quality child care.
- ➡️ A previous study, which led to the launch of the program, found that more than half of children in the south Phoenix area, ages birth to 5, were being cared for outside of a licensed child care setting.
- ➡️ Immigrant communities and communities of color, where many parents have jobs with non-traditional hours, they tend to use informal care as an option and prefer caregivers who share language and culture.
- ➡️ Kith and Kin’s 12-week program aims to provide the type of training and support required of licensed caregivers. This includes topics in CPR and infant development.
- ➡️ The state pays for the program using its tobacco tax. About 1,000 caregivers are trained each year. Melinda Gulick, CEO of Arizona’s First Things First early education agency, says the funding is a recognition that all children, regardless of where they spend their early years, deserve a high-quality early education experience.
