West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday said the state was facing a financial meltdown and called an emergency meeting to discuss the issue.

The Governor also requested a white paper on state finances from the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government.

“It is very disturbing, shocking, devastating to see that West Bengal is facing a financial meltdown. Its public finances are in crisis,” CV Ananda Bose said.

The governor said that as the responsible governor, he, based on the authority conferred on the governor by Article 167 of the Constitution of India, requested an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss this issue.

The comment came after his meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

In a statement published in X, West Bengal Raj Bhavan said Bose held discussions with Sitharaman on various issues of national importance and stressed the need to implement income-generating economic development programmes for those in the fisheries sector.

Stating that the Governor should also play the role of a watchdog over the finances and other aspects of the administration of the State as mandated under Article 167 of the Constitution of India, the statement said, “He (Bose) proposes to send a critical review of the financial management of the State to the Chief Minister with a direction to place the same before the Council of Ministers. Bose also demanded a white paper on the finances of the State from the Government of West Bengal.”

On Friday, the West Bengal Governor’s office slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her alleged comments suggesting that women do not feel safe going to Ram Bhavan. According to the PTI report, Bose has filed a defamation case against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Calcutta High Court.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the tussle between Mamata Banerjee and CV Ananda Bose, amid the row over the swearing-in of two newly elected TMC MPs, was tarnishing the image of the state.
